I first heard the Orange Blossom Special song on a record by Johnny Cash singing in Folsom Prison. It became one of my favorite love songs. Here are a whole bunch of artists doing the same song in all different ways. Some of these people are so talented, that it makes me feel like I am still in Kindergarten with my music.
Most of my favorite singers are American, but I didn’t grow up in America, so it has been hard for me to figure out when all these people lived. So I drew up this timeline to help me try and figure out when these people lived, and if they knew each other or influenced each other.
I have often thought of this song, and longed to be by the sea. It is so tough to be “working till the sun don’t shine.” Slim Whitman sings all these songs so well.
The first gospel record I ever heard was by Slim Whitman, and some of his songs are featured here. Many thanks to the people who do these fantastic videos.
Yesterday I walked to the park, and saw that the pool was closed. There was a cold wind, and it hit me so hard that the summer was over. My heart felt so sad. So I came back home and looked up songs that brought back memories of that summer feeling, and so I am making this section on my favorite love songs about summer. This way, I will be able to pretend it is summer all year long!
This song means a lot to me, and I find myself listening to it over and over. It is a bit sad, but my wife has been away for a few weeks, and in the song he says that one day she’ll come back to me.
I saw Merle Haggard on TV once where he was saying that Johnny Cash gave him some good advice. He said he must tell the people he has been in prison, that the people would understand. If he didn’t, and the media found out, they would ruin his career.
When I was little, I remember Pastor Shanklin singing this song, and playing his piano accordion. It is so wonderful to be able to hear these old songs on the youtube. Many many years later I wrote my own song about Galilee, after being in Israel, called: Blue Galilee.
When I was visiting South Africa in 1971, I stayed a few months with “Uncle” Willie Roeland at his house called “Eldorado.” He told me once how he was in a car full of businessmen hurrying to get to a meeting, when a tire blew out. He said they went all over the road, miraculously missing all the other cars, then the car rolled a few times, then spun around on it’s roof before landing back on it’s wheels. He said he only had time to say: “Jesus.” He said as they sat there in the car in total shock, with the dust settling, there was a tape in the tape deck, and someone was singing this song: “In times like these – you need a Savior.” Wow – that’s true!
When I was little, I heard my Mother singing this song, and it has remained one of my favorite gospel songs. It brings back so many memories of my childhood.
I remember hearing my daughter singing this one, so I feel it must be one of her favorite gospel songs.
I found it so sad to read that Mr. Jack Holcomb died at the age of 47, but he achieved something for Jesus. We can be so blessed so many years later with his beautiful rendition of these magnificent songs.
I love the way she hits that high note at the end. I long to be by the sea. This is one of my favorite love songs, but it takes a good voice to hit the high and low notes. Linda has that voice!
Once you love someone, it is hard to stop. When I was young I used to get very sad singing this favorite love song because it reminded me of a girl who was very special to me.
